An unidentified royal photograph tests ship attribution

A candid image from the Canadian royal visit may show Southampton or Newcastle, but neither the Admiralty copy nor its caption identifies the ship or photographer.

Notes

The cruiser in a royal-party photograph cannot yet be identified as Southampton or Newcastle. Formal portraits normally had an assigned photographer, whereas members of the royal party often took candid images because camera access around them was restricted. The photograph reached the Admiralty as a thank-you, but the surviving archival description identifies neither the cruiser nor the person behind the camera. Provenance can be known while decisive attribution details remain absent.
