Chapter · 33:38-35:47

Reconnaissance, fleet, and strike carriers

Prewar doctrine assigned scouting, sustained fleet support, and heavy offensive blows to different carrier groups operating as a coordinated system.

Notes

Scout or cruiser carriers would help find the enemy, fleet carriers would sustain reconnaissance and air defense near the battle fleet, and strike carriers would deliver powerful attacks from another direction. The Royal Navy exercised multi-carrier methods and created senior aviation command arrangements for them. Wartime losses and commitments prevented the full concept from being realized until late in the conflict, when the intended kind of enemy fleet battle was no longer available.
