Charles Lamb's Swordfish escape from Fiat fighters

Charles Lamb used the Swordfish's low-speed handling to force two attacking Fiat biplanes past him, but damage showed how narrow the escape had been.

Notes

Charles Lamb carried an observer to watch behind his Swordfish and make sure that no fighters followed it toward the secret base at Paramythia. When two Fiat biplanes attacked, he jettisoned his torpedo, stood the Swordfish on its tail, and dived after the faster aircraft overshot. He repeated the manoeuvre on their next approach and saw both fighters crash into the sea. The observer survived the violent evasive flying, but Lamb later found that machine-gun fire had damaged both the aircraft and his parachute. The episode shows how the Swordfish's unusually slow handling could become a defensive advantage without making the encounter safe.
