The Royal Navy’s recurring 13.5-inch preference

Repulse’s main battery opens a longer history of British 13.5-inch guns and a counterfactual about the pace of the dreadnought arms race.

Notes

Repulse carried four 13.5-inch guns, a calibre presented as a recurring Royal Navy preference rather than a one-off choice. The lineage runs through the Trafalgar and Admiral classes and forward to the Orion class, with the later return to 13.5-inch weapons attributed to deep procurement habits. A counterfactual asks how fitting HMS Dreadnought with comparable guns might have changed foreign reactions to the ship. Gun calibre communicated competitive intent as well as raw fighting power: an 11- or 12-inch design could look inadequate before any battle was fought.
