British submarines and anti-submarine preparation

British submarine design, Mediterranean operations, Far Eastern planning, and ASW doctrine rebut the claim that the Royal Navy dismissed underwater warfare.

Notes

British boats were numerous and continuously developed during the interwar years, often with more streamlined hull forms than popular images of German U-boats suggest. At several points in the 1920s and 1930s, the Royal Navy had the world's largest submarine force and kept building new designs. In the Mediterranean, the Malta-based 10th Submarine Flotilla attacked Axis traffic moving between Europe and North Africa. British submarines also operated from Australia and elsewhere against Japan from the opening of the Far Eastern war. Their lower profile in British cultural memory does not mean the Royal Navy ignored either submarine design or operational employment.
