The Royal Navy's eastern problem: protect a trading empire

British strategy in the east began with protecting an empire whose economy depended on seaborne trade.

Notes

The Royal Navy's eastern task centered on protecting the trade that supported Britain and its empire. The Indian Ocean often received ships adapted to jobs for which they had not originally been designed. Major units might pass through, while the theater made do as Germany, Italy, and other fronts competed for resources. Operation C exposed the practical consequence: Somerville could assemble carriers and use land bases, yet a shortage of destroyers still constrained how those assets could operate together.
