The S class was probably the best-balanced design for the North Sea and northern waters, even if that theater offered few glamorous targets. Sixty-two boats made it the largest submarine group built for the Royal Navy, including fifty improved wartime examples. Their value included intelligence collection and covert work off Germany and Norway as well as attacks on major warships. Large numbers also allowed S-class boats to appear across the war's maritime theaters and provide a dependable backbone for the service.
