Could the Royal Navy have sent more battleships and support units into the Pacific earlier?
Short answerNot without weakening essential European and Mediterranean commitments; the later Pacific deployment also required a major support chain.
NotesBritain could not simply send its whole battle fleet to the Pacific while German and Italian capital ships remained threats in European and Mediterranean waters. The Royal Navy also maintained an Indian Ocean fleet, while Australian ships formed part of the wider British Commonwealth commitment. Forces appeared in the Pacific as strategic priorities and available ships allowed. Once assembled, the British Pacific Fleet depended on a long logistics chain, so deployment was a support problem as much as a question of hull numbers.
