Question

What reference work can accompany reading about officers in Nelson's Navy?

Short answer

Royal Navy Officers of the Seven Years War is suggested for tracing the earlier careers of officers who appear later.

Notes

Royal Navy Officers of the Seven Years War: A Biographical Dictionary of Commissioned Officers, 1748-1763 is recommended alongside Dudley Pope's naval fiction. It covers an earlier generation of service. Officers who became senior figures later can be traced back into that period. The recommendation accompanies a question about Diamond Rock, whose history receives a separate follow-up.
