Should the Royal Navy have retained small carriers or built comparable ships for Harriers and Merlins?
Short answerThe better course would be ship-for-ship LHD replacements for Albion, Bulwark, and Ocean, supporting F-35s and a reinforced, self-contained Royal Marines force.
NotesThe proposal replaces Albion, Bulwark, and the former Ocean ship-for-ship with LHDs rather than recreating the Invincible class. More flight decks would preserve aviation availability, while large docks would support interventions that cannot be handled by very light forces. The existing commando structure would expand to five companies with light artillery, amphibious APCs, logistics, and air defence. Embarking that reinforced formation on one assault ship would give Britain a self-contained intervention force with its own mobility and support.
