How feedwater tanks became a wartime fuel reserve

Some Royal Navy ships apparently gained wartime range when feedwater tanks were rerouted to carry several hundred additional tons of fuel.

Notes

Surviving paperwork may not explain how quickly this adaptation appeared. Within days of World War II beginning, some Royal Navy water tanks could apparently be rerouted to carry extra fuel. The ships then operated successfully without the feedwater capacity those tanks had provided. The change offered several hundred additional tons of fuel and therefore more range without altering the hull. The claim remains cautious because the source trail does not establish how the modification was prepared so quickly.
