Flower- and Castle-class corvettes and Hunt-class destroyers are distinguished by their duty to escort a convoy or task force. Black Swan-class sloops are identified with specialist groups that could pursue a contact or reinforce a threatened convoy. The difference concerns what a ship was assigned to do when a submarine appeared. A comparison with a standard Leander and a specialist anti-submarine frigate illustrates the distinction between remaining with the protected ships and being sent to attack a submarine.
