Britain's Danube involvement grew out of the naval mission and brigade supporting Serbia during the First World War. The river offered a route into a country far inland as Serbian forces resisted the Central Powers. HMS Glowworm was among the gunboats associated with the British deployment, while Captain Vernon Haggard combined responsibility for the naval brigade and flotilla. The mission became a formal flotilla in 1919, and a British vessel remained on the river until 1926.
