Cruiser tradition explains shifting Royal Navy ship labels

An aside on HMS Warrior and battlecruiser terminology shows how Royal Navy labels followed changing roles, technology, and power density rather than a fixed size ladder.

Notes

For much of its modern history, the Royal Navy was numerically a cruiser navy, and HMS Warrior shows why period labels can mislead modern readers. Warrior fought in the battle line yet entered service as an ironclad frigate because classification reflected contemporary categories as well as tactical role. The one-word battlecruiser, the earlier two-word battle cruiser, fast battleship, and battleship occupied positions on an evolving spectrum. What designers could combine in one hull changed with machinery and power density, so the same role did not always carry the same name. This helps explain how a large missile ship could be called a destroyer while inheriting cruiser work.
