When a cut-price cruiser becomes a false economy

The cruiser discussion distinguishes genuinely efficient small hulls from savings that reduce endurance or long-term value without cutting construction time enough.

Notes

Smaller cruisers did not all represent the same kind of economy measure. The Arethusa class is described as about the smallest hull that still functions as an effective cruiser, rather than a merely cheap substitute. The Crown Colony class instead reflects a wartime-oriented Town-class simplification intended to shorten construction by removing features needed for longer service. Whether that saving justified abandoning the larger Belfast and Edinburgh pattern remains disputed, especially once wartime interruptions changed actual build times. Procurement economy has to be measured against capability, schedule, and service life together.
