How admiral, commodore, captain, and commander entered naval use

Arabic, Dutch, French, Latin, and English roots show how naval command vocabulary moved between maritime powers.

Notes

Admiral's Arabic roots express the idea of a commander of the sea. English and French encounters with Mediterranean command systems encouraged the adoption of an existing title when they needed someone to exercise a comparable role. Commodore reaches English through Dutch usage and shares its origins with commander. Captain comes through French and English usage from Latin, carrying the sense of chief or leader. Commander describes a person entrusted with the responsibility and authority to give an order.
