JW 51B's mixed close escort and war-emergency destroyers

A mixed close escort protected JW 51B, with O-class destroyers combining varied gun fits, torpedoes, and minelaying capacity in designs suited to rapid construction.

Notes

The close escort combined Flower-class corvettes, the minesweeper-sloop HMS Bramble, trawlers, and A-, O-, and M-class destroyers. Several O-class ships had only entered service during 1942 as part of the War Emergency Programme. Their fits balanced roles: some carried 4-inch high-angle guns for surface and anti-aircraft fire, while torpedo batteries and capacity for as many as sixty mines added offensive options. Official orders date to September 1939, although design work appears to have been under way from about 1937. Experienced destroyer yards could begin construction quickly from that preparation. Later photographs need care because the lattice masts often shown on these ships were fitted after Barents Sea.
