Fleet carriers, convoy escorts, and strike escort carriers

The wartime Royal Navy employed carrier aviation in distinct fleet-fighting, convoy-protection, and strike roles rather than around one standardized air-group mission.

Notes

Royal Navy carrier employment already varied widely in 1945. Fleet carriers fought with the British Pacific Fleet, while escort carriers protected convoys across several theatres. Other escort carriers carried air groups configured for offensive strikes rather than routine convoy cover. These missions demanded different combinations of fighters, patrol endurance, and attack aircraft. The early jet transition therefore had to serve several existing operational systems instead of replacing a single carrier doctrine.
