Naval power, food relief, and Estonia in 1919

A book-led account of the Baltic intervention links Royal Navy operations with Estonian defense, American food relief, White Russian politics, and the strategic question of attacking toward Petrograd.

Notes

The episode follows Estonia's struggle against a renewed Red Army offensive while Allied diplomats warned that hunger could undermine resistance. Herbert Hoover's American Relief Administration sent an initial two thousand tons of food as tangible support for Estonia. The Royal Navy under Admiral Cowan searched for Soviet forces and remained positioned to influence events in the Gulf of Finland. The account also shows why Estonian and Finnish political aims did not neatly align with White Russian plans to recreate a larger Russia.
