The Royal Navy's 1980 anti-submarine modernization plan

Keith Speed's reply inventories SSNs, Invincible-class carriers, Type 22 frigates, helicopters, and new torpedoes intended to counter Soviet submarines.

Notes

Anti-submarine warfare required a coordinated system. Trafalgar-class hunter-killer submarines, Invincible-class command carriers, Type 22 frigates, Lynx helicopters, maritime patrol aircraft, sensors, and torpedoes all had to mature together. The planned force would expand the SSN fleet and replace older weapons while improving detection and command. Sting Ray receives special emphasis because ships and aircraft capable of finding a submarine are of limited value without a reliable weapon to finish the engagement. Together, these programmes formed the Royal Navy's planned response to the Soviet undersea threat during the 1980s.
