How did the Royal Navy regard and manage the press?
Short answerIt generally worked with journalists while relying on groups such as the Navy League to conduct much of the public advocacy.
NotesRoyal Navy press relations differed from a model in which journalists are treated primarily as a problem to contain. The service could work with the press but often left active public advocacy to outside organizations. The Navy League was particularly useful in translating naval priorities into a political and popular campaign. That division let the uniformed institution preserve a degree of official distance while still benefiting from public support.
