Personal encounters with Royal Marines show many of them to be highly qualified and among the armed forces' smartest personnel. This is a recurring observation, not a formal comparison across services. Conversations can reveal a depth of specialist education that is not obvious from a person's rank alone. The Corps' elite reputation rests on professional knowledge and adaptability as well as demanding commando training.
