Should the Army take on more amphibious warfare as the Royal Marines become more specialised?
Short answerThe Royal Marines are likely to need a larger, reinforced amphibious structure rather than remaining only a light specialist force.
NotesA small specialist force may be enough for limited counter-terrorism tasks, but disputed-island or higher-intensity contingencies demand more. A credible littoral strike ship needs at least several companies plus command, aviation, logistics, and fire-support elements. Once those supporting requirements are counted, the force approaches a full or reinforced Royal Marines commando. That scale also provides reserves if a supposedly light opponent proves closer to an organized state-backed force. The concept is therefore expected to evolve toward a British amphibious ready group instead of remaining a collection of isolated raiding teams. Force protection and reinforcement capacity are central to amphibious specialization.
