The Royal Navy produced so many deserving admirals that commemoration could never keep pace with the officer list. Joshua Rowley became a vice-admiral of the white, while his father William had reached admiral of the white under the older colour-squadron hierarchy. Sir Charles Rowley also became an admiral, but only after the colour distinctions had disappeared. His later service as Third Naval Lord placed the family's influence inside naval administration as well as fleet command.
