Rugged drones offer the Queen Elizabeth class options

Rough-strip and short-takeoff drone designs may adapt readily to British ski-jump carriers, though their simplicity limits payload and mission flexibility.

Notes

Many land-based drones are already built for austere strips, giving them ruggedness useful at sea. Without catapults or arrested recovery, the Royal Navy can consider light short-takeoff designs requiring relatively modest changes to its carriers. This opens more near-term options than adapting a conventional land-based fighter for naval service. The tradeoff is capability: a compact aircraft optimized for short takeoff may be mission-specific and a poor tanker, even if its flight hours are cheaper than using an F-35 for support tasks.
