Why does Roslyn Wemyss deserve more recognition as First Sea Lord?
Short answerWemyss was a highly capable, under-remembered officer who helped rebuild British strategy and might have been a stronger post-war First Sea Lord.
NotesRoslyn Wemyss was a capable officer who helped rework British strategy after succeeding Jellicoe and before Beatty. His wartime career included cruiser command, responsibility at Mudros, the Cape Helles and Suvla Bay landings, and command in the East Indies and Egypt. As First Sea Lord he backed Roger Keyes and the Zeebrugge raid while helping make British strategy more effective. His retirement after the armistice was a lost opportunity, and retaining him would have been preferable to appointing Beatty to the post-war office.
