Chapter · 32:54-35:40

How current and private profit delivered Rosario to Drake

Rosario drifted away from the Spanish formation and was captured at night by Drake, whose prize motive disrupted the English fleet.

Notes

While supporting Santa Ana, Rosario was carried away from the Spanish center by the current and drifted toward the English. Her separation exposed the same tidal danger that worried Medina Sidonia when considering independent action by the galleasses. Revenge, commanded by Francis Drake, took Rosario during darkness and brought a valuable ship and the high-ranking Don Pedro de Valdés into English hands. English crews knew that Spanish flagships could carry substantial funds, which gave the nighttime pursuit an immediate financial incentive. Drake extinguished his lantern during the pursuit. The move confused ships meant to follow him and let personal profit interfere with fleet coordination.
