A Roman praetor's judicial and military duties

Praetors could perform judicial duties, substitute for consuls and receive provincial assignments.

Notes

A praetor is described as a magistrate with judicial duties in Rome who could also take a junior military command. Praetors could act where a consul could not go and govern one of the smaller provinces. The account places their number at about eight by the 1st century BC. The proposed link between blue clothing and maritime duties is a tentative recollection, so that costume detail remains uncertain.
