History does not move in a straight line

The closing reflection challenges a simple dark-age collapse followed by an inevitable medieval and Renaissance ascent.

Notes

The post-Roman world cannot be reduced to an uncomplicated collapse into ignorance. Many people remained educated even though the governmental unity needed to maintain infrastructure had weakened. Calling the era dark can make the medieval period and Renaissance appear to form a reassuring upward line toward modernity. A comparison with irregular economic graphs shows historical change advancing, reversing, and moving sideways instead of following a predetermined path.
