Chapter ยท 12:15-14:18

Roger Keyes: fertile ideas and uneven execution

Keyes is assessed as an energetic source of amphibious and commando ideas whose rhetoric often exceeded his ability to execute them.

Notes

Roger Keyes generated operational ideas at a remarkable rate. Like Churchill, he produced many schemes, only a few of which were workable, and identifying those few was difficult. Ideas associated with commandos and modern amphibious warfare grew from his First World War operations and Second World War plans, though he often failed to execute his own concepts. His political self-confidence, including appearing in the House of Commons in full naval uniform, made him influential but did not close the gap between conception and execution.
