HMS Roebuck surveyed the United Kingdom's continental shelf but was also equipped for overseas operations. A full hydrographic sensor suite and an embarked motorboat allowed her to combine broader deployments with detailed inshore work. Her retirement followed those of Herald, Beagle, and Bulldog. Replacing those four vessels with Echo and Enterprise improved individual capability while reducing the Royal Navy's survey-ship numbers.
