Rodney's efforts to advance his son alienated officers even within his own faction. His conduct at St Eustatius also complicated relationships with other officers and the prospect of another appointment. He was sixty-four at the Saintes, after a naval career stretching back about fifty years, and his health deteriorated after his return home. Although he had previously rallied at sea, his seniority and the controversy surrounding him made another suitable command difficult to arrange. He received a pension and lived until 1792, spending the last decade of his life without another fleet.
