The surviving record places George Rodney's baptism on 13 February 1718 but does not establish his date of birth. Later writers sometimes turned the unlucky 13th into a Valentine's Day birthday without firm evidence. Because baptism commonly followed birth by three or four weeks, Rodney may have been born in January or late December, though early February remains possible. A wealthy family controlling the parish living might arrange an unusually prompt baptism, but Rodney's family did not hold that position. The distinction shows why historians must separate what a parish source records from an attractive later inference.

Why Rodney's exact birthday remains uncertain
Rodney's surviving baptism date, later birthday assumptions, and ordinary parish practice illustrate how historians reason from incomplete biographical records.
