Chapter · 49:40-51:04

Rodney's operational luck and the Bismarck battle

Rodney repeatedly reached conspicuous operations, most famously Bismarck, but firing her own heavy battery also inflicted serious structural strain.

Notes

Rodney's name was recognizable without overshadowing the ship, and her deployments repeatedly put her near highly visible events. She reached Bismarck while Nelson did not, converting opportunity into the episode that dominates her public reputation. The battle also demonstrates the physical violence of heavy-gun fire because Rodney's own salvos buckled her deck more than German fire did. Fame therefore arose from timing and success, but the success imposed a real material cost on the battleship delivering it.
