Robert Jenkins's later career shows why he was regarded as a respected master mariner despite his probable involvement in smuggling. The East India Company depended on cargo reaching its destination and therefore valued capable captains, trained officers, and sufficient crews. Understaffing a ship could cost more in lost goods than it saved in wages. In 1741 the company sent Jenkins to St Helena to investigate corruption allegations against the acting governor. After finding the charges substantiated, he administered the island from May 1741 until March 1742, when a replacement arrived. He then returned to sea and convoy work as a well-paid captain.
