Why Robert E. Lee's logistical weakness mattered

An American Civil War aside argues that dramatic battlefield positions could not compensate for Robert E. Lee's weak attention to logistics as the conflict lengthened.

Notes

Robert E. Lee is used as an example of a commander whose dramatic battlefield decisions drew more attention than his handling of supply. A general may get away with treating logistics as someone else's problem during the opening stage of a war. As a conflict lengthens, supply and replacement systems shape what an army can still attempt. A commander with that weakness needs an effective staff and must listen to it, or the weakness eventually compromises the command.
