Robert Calder and a career slowed by controversy

Robert Calder returned home to defend his conduct after the Battle of Cape Finisterre, depriving Nelson of an experienced vice admiral and the 98-gun HMS Prince of Wales.

Notes

Calder could have been a useful senior reinforcement after the Battle of Cape Finisterre. His flagship, the 98-gun second rate HMS Prince of Wales, would have added another powerful ship to Nelson's fleet. Calder's presence would also have given Collingwood a second Vice Admiral of the Blue with recent battle-command experience. Instead, Calder returned home to clear his name over the disputed action. His choice put personal reputation in conflict with the fleet's immediate operational needs.
