Robert Blake entered naval command after a prominent Civil War career that included the sieges of Lyme Regis, Taunton, and Dunster. Appointed general at sea in 1649 despite little documented seagoing experience, he proved able to learn quickly and motivate sailors. He also pressed the Admiralty for reforms, including stronger articles that reinforced an admiral's authority over captains. Those achievements help explain why later officers such as Nelson treated Blake as a foundational model for British naval leadership.
