Star shell, communications, and practiced readiness

The 1943 action worked because illumination, gun power, communications, machinery, crews, and shore support had been trained into one reliable system.

Notes

Two-pounder star shell could illuminate an E-boat while its incendiary effect also contributed directly to the engagement. The dispatch paired that tool with the concentrated gun power of the Fairmile D boats, including MGB 603's fight against six opponents while the damaged MGB 607 was nearby. It also records broader improvement in coastal-force communications and radar use. The small number of breakdowns reflected the work of crews, engineering officers, and shore-base staffs as well as the boats themselves. Constant training and practice made the ambush system repeatable instead of leaving success to improvisation.
