A harmless name concealed a flexible raiding unit

The Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment's mundane title concealed both its purpose and the unusual equipment that covert maritime raids required.

Notes

The unit's name sounded like a routine harbor-defense organization rather than a force preparing submarine-launched kayak attacks. That bureaucratic cover protected the mission from casual attention within government as well as from enemy intelligence. It also gave the detachment a plausible reason to obtain fast boats, kayaks, weapons, and other specialist equipment without advertising a particular operation. Administrative naming and procurement flexibility thus became practical parts of wartime operational security.
