Why a battle line needs combined firepower

A battle line succeeds through the combined performance of its ships, while the heaviest guns on one hull cannot compensate for weak support.

Notes

Three fast battleships face a French line built around one 15.5-inch-gunned battleship and two 14.2-inch-gunned battlecruisers. The French battleship has the largest individual calibre, but its supporting ships cannot bring enough effective fire into the action. The opposing line combines armour, 15-inch firepower, and concentrated fire well enough to destroy the lighter torpedo carriers before they can close. Coordinated firepower determines the performance of the battle line. In this simulated engagement, the heavy units fail to keep their torpedo force alive long enough to attack.
