River Plate preceded the strategic turn toward Italy

The Battle of the River Plate curtailed part of Germany’s distant surface-raider threat before Italy’s entry shifted attention toward the Mediterranean and North Africa.

Notes

British priorities changed as the war expanded across Europe. The Battle of the River Plate had already shut down much of Germany’s distant surface activity, while fighting in Denmark, Norway, and continental Europe drew attention northward. Italy’s entry then created an active land and maritime front in North Africa. British planning shifted from containing scattered German raiders to confronting a concentrated Italian fleet and protecting Mediterranean communications.
