River-class ships and everyday maritime contact

Patrol vessels and presence frigates do the repeated port visits and encounters that make a navy politically visible.

Notes

River-class patrol vessels and Type 31 frigates are expected to handle much of the Royal Navy's routine interaction at sea, including port calls, conversations, and responses to foreign warships transiting nearby waters. This work depends on having enough hulls to appear repeatedly instead of reserving every task for the most capable warship. Meeting Russian transits through the English Channel shows how ordinary contact and monitoring consume real fleet capacity. A balanced fleet can therefore combine broad peacetime security coverage with a concentrated high-end combat core.
