Postwar navies chose River-class frigates from the surplus fleet

The River class remained attractive after 1945 even when surplus fleets gave foreign navies a wide choice of inexpensive wartime ships.

Notes

The end of the Second World War placed a large number of inexpensive ships on the transfer market. Navies that had not operated River-class frigates during the conflict could choose among many surplus types. Numerous states nevertheless selected Rivers for postwar service. That pattern cannot prove every aspect of the design, but it is strong evidence that buyers valued the class's balance of capability, cost, and maintainability. Diamantina represents a design whose usefulness extended well beyond its original wartime requirement.
