Cleburne held Hooker's larger force at Ringgold Gap for five hours, despite facing roughly three-to-one odds. The delay allowed Confederate wagons and artillery to escape and limited the Union pursuit. Grant also faced short rations and urgent pressure to relieve Burnside at Knoxville, giving him practical reasons not to press farther through the gap. Even so, the campaign left the Union in control of Chattanooga and its crucial transport connections. That logistical base made Sherman's 1864 Atlanta Campaign possible and marked Grant's final major victory in the western theater before his promotion to command all Union armies.
