Medieval builders raised massive stone defenses without modern tower cranes or powered earth-moving machinery. They relied on timber structures, block and tackle, ramps, scaffolding, and cranes driven by people or oxen. Wooden supports built into or against the rising walls gave workers successive levels from which to continue the masonry. Castle design therefore had to fit the labor, materials, site, and equipment actually available.
