Chapter ยท 0:14-4:30

Castles as combined power

The opening reframes Edward I's North Wales castles as a system of civil authority, land control, sea supply, and secure harbors.

Notes

The Ring of Iron challenges the usual division between castles as land power and fleets as sea power. Edward I's castles combined royal authority, an imposing psychological presence, garrisoned force, and maritime supply. Their troops could patrol beyond the walls, while constables, bailiffs, and other officers exercised civil power in the surrounding districts. Docks and protected harbors also gave fleets places to assemble, store supplies, and support operations ashore. The castles worked as linked centers of government, fortification, logistics, and sea control.
