Inconstant carried ten 12-ton 9-inch guns and six 7-inch rifled muzzle-loaders. The 7-inch guns fired shells of roughly 112 to 115 pounds, including Palliser armour-piercing, common, and shrapnel ammunition. Preserved 9-inch examples at Simon's Town and Hurst Castle show what this heavy battery looked like. The practical distinction is between advertised maximum range and useful range: roughly 9,000 yards for the 9-inch weapon and 5,000 for the 7-inch.
