Rickover's political power and retirement

Rickover's blunt use of authority made him effective but politically vulnerable. After his removal, he rejected a ceremonial White House role.

Notes

In this account, nuclear safety and operational requirements both mattered, but Rickover did too little to explain his decisions or build durable political support. The authority that once allowed him to pressure politicians also made those politicians wary of him. After the Reagan administration's defense secretary removed him, President Ronald Reagan offered a nuclear-adviser role. Rickover appeared at the White House in full uniform and rejected what he regarded as a window-dressing appointment.
