Richmond K. Turner shifted from training to surveillance

Richmond K. Turner's career links Vietnam-era search and rescue, repeated modernization, Soviet surveillance, Persian Gulf operations, and Bosnia service.

Notes

Richmond K. Turner moved repeatedly between overhaul, training, surveillance, and forward operations during the Cold War. Her early assignments included search-and-rescue duty in the Gulf of Tonkin and a major 1971 refit during the US Navy's wider NTDS upgrade effort. After refresher training at Guantanamo Bay in 1978, the newly upgraded ship was redirected to monitor Soviet units in the West Indies. She then transited the Panama Canal for surveillance off Nicaragua. Later service included Persian Gulf operations from 1988, duty connected with Bosnia, and eventual disposal in a sink exercise. The rapid move from training to surveillance shows why modernized ships were useful during an unfolding task.
